XBRL is used in the United Kingdom for the mandatory filing of Company Tax information to HMRC and the voluntary filing of annual reports and accounts to Companies House. Together, these government programmes have been responsible for the creation of over six million XBRL documents to date.
These are the largest XBRL filing programmes in the world, and have been notable for their smooth roll-out and implementation, with widespread adoption by software vendors supporting the market. Most accountants filing their returns never see an "angle bracket".
